How do I get WoW to play smoothly on my sucky desktop?

My frame rate just drop drastically sometimes to even 5-8 making the game unplayable...my system is a p4 3.4GHZ/1g ram with a nvidia 6600 le with a broken fan. I've been monitoring the GPU temp but I couldn't find a relation between it and the framerate drop, any thoughts?
