Know God? or Know religion?

I am leading a devotion on this subject, but I don't know how to start, like I want to kind of get to how religion has made us not see the real God, they make him look so complicated when all he does is he wants to give us his love for us. Religion even though religion is a way how we can show our love to God through discipline and such. Any opinions? etc. Oh and I got the idea by a speaker named Brett Ullman.
